POEM
“I long to know the way through, to let the flood gates open, to let myself spill out - like dripping paint - all across a perfect canvas.
I’d like to know thatI can be any color I want to be - grey when I am sad, pink when I am jumping for delight.
I’d like to know that the sight of me spilling out would fill you as it goes like a cup that overflows and that my joy would find a place to pool somewhere we could all bathe in.
I hope my heart takes shape in a way that makes everything around it beautiful, and that the fullness of my being will wrap you like a warm, soft blanket late into the night as you try to remember how to paint your own canvas.
But I know that the way through is lonely - that my colors may never be seen, that I can’t show you how to be clean or messy, that the songs I sing will sound like whispers and that I cannot ever wrap you in my blanket.
But I still hope you will hear me someday echoing in the dark, that it will touch a spark and remind you faintly of a song you also used to know.
And then, I hope, you will discover how to paint with your favorite colors and together we will spill out all over the canvas.”
